Room-by-Room Security: Garage
Garages are more than a place to keep cars. Many of us store tools, outdoor furniture, and recreational vehicles. That is why we are featuring it in this week’s room-by-room security series.
Car Safety
Most likely the most valuable item in your garage, your car is a potential target for a burglar. To ensure that the car and items stored inside are safeguarded, it’s important to keep the doors locked and windows closed.
Your car can also pose as a potential risk when it’s parked in the garage. Never leave your car running in a closed garage, even if it’s for a short amount of time. The carbon monoxide emitted is extremely dangerous to breathe in and it can seep into the rest of your home.
Storage Safety
Besides storing our cars, we use our garages for extra storage. The biggest risk here is accidents. Make sure you keep clutter to a minimum and organize your storage. Keeping heavy or dangerous objects stored lower and store items in label boxes so they won’t get pushed and pulled around.
An obvious danger in storage areas is fire, particularly if you are storing flammable items like old clothing or lumber. Make sure that you have a fire extinguisher nearby and keep dust to a minimum.
Keeping Burglars Out
Garages can be an easy target for burglars, especially if it provides and easy access point. That’s why you should always make sure that your garage has a lock on it. If you use a pin to open your garage door don’t share it with anyone outside of your family.
