Do Security Systems Need to Be Maintained?

A number of feelings come with security system installation. For Vigilante Security, there’s the satisfaction of a job well done, and knowing we’ve done right by our customers. For our clients, there’s often a sigh of relief; it’s not just an item checked off the to-do list, it’s a robust layer of protection for their home or business. Anyone offering alarm monitoring services knows, however, that the work doesn’t end with the activation of your system. You’ll need to take good care of it, and we’re here to help.

Check Security System Batteries

Most components we install are hard-wired, so they’re always powered up. Of course, you don’t want your protection to end if the power goes out, so most of the components we install — from cameras to smoke detectors, and even your main control panel — have battery backups. Even when they’re charged by the same electricity that’s powering the unit, those batteries age out and need periodic replacement.

Inspect Equipment Regularly

Visual inspections of security equipment are also important. We’ve seen everything from damage to housings and cases, bird’s nests interfering with security cameras, or even signs of tampering on everything from cameras to access controls. You can’t address what you can’t see, so be diligent about this.

Test Equipment

Test procedures will vary based on the kind of system you have, and the peripherals wired to it. We’ll go over this with you during the design and installation phase of a project, but it also helps to consult your owner’s manuals and test the control panel, peripherals, and apps on schedule. If something isn’t working properly, call us immediately.

Keep Equipment Clean

Some security equipment, like cameras and certain outdoor systems (like video fire detection equipment) is exposed to the elements. Even indoor equipment can be exposed to dust, contaminants, cigarette smoke, pet hair, and a number of other things that can interfere with operation. Making sure that your equipment stays reasonably clean helps to ensure proper operation.

Maintain and Change Equipment as Needed

Some equipment needs to be maintained or serviced by a knowledgeable technician. Call us for service, especially if your control panel is giving you a warning. It’s also worth noting that advances in technology will make replacing some types of equipment a good idea, while age takes its toll on others; smoke and carbon monoxide detectors especially should be replaced, but so should other types of environmental monitoring depending on the gear and the conditions in which it’s used.

Remember It’s Not Just Your Equipment

We take pride in our work, and in the products we install and service. That said, the most important security system you have is the bit between your ears. So don’t just maintain your equipment; maintain your property, thoughtfully and intentionally.

Think through the hazards, and address them. A gate that’s coming off its hinges, a fence with holes in it, or a window that’s sagging in its frame are all invitations to trouble. Locks — on doors and windows alike — should be checked to make sure they’re in working order. Outdoor lighting should be ample and bright. Items like ladders and heavy tools should be put away when not in use so they don’t give someone easier access to your home or business. Flammables near open flames or anything with a heating element should be moved. And even your landscaping deserves attention, since you don’t want to give a thief or arsonist an easy hiding place.

With so many choices for alarm and security monitoring companies, it can be hard making the right choice. We invite you to get in touch with Vigilante Security to find out more about the services we offer, and for a system that’s custom-designed for your needs.
